Acne: The Different Types and Acne Home Remedies

By Bobby Blueblood

Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin disease; increase in androgen level, excessive oily skin, extreme use of cosmetics, malfunctioning of liver, genetic defect(s), smoking and drinking – these are the most important causes for acne. It affects the face, shoulders, and back.

Acne is broadly categorized as under:

Mild Acne

a. Blackheads and Milia – blackheads appear on the forehead and nose during the early period of adolescence whereas, milia appear in the chin and eye area. Even many adults suffer from blackheads and milia. The affected skin looks black due to the reaction of ‘melanin’ with oxygen.

b. Whiteheads – appearing earlier than blackheads, a portion of the skin surface looks white when the skin pores get blocked by oil, cells of dead skin and bacteria.

c. Papules – it forms along with blackheads and milia. These are red, tender and inflamed bumps that affect the shoulders and chest; even they move to the back in males and to the cheeks, chin and jaw line in females.

d. Pustules – they are inflamed red circle with yellow center.

Severe Acne

a. Nodules – in this most severe type, the inflammation grows as papules and pustules and affects the shoulders, chest, neck, upper back and face. Nodules are painful, larger and last for months. If a person suffering from nodules does not get it treated properly, scarring would occur –more the infection, more the scars! Of course, there are ways to prevent the scarring – a Dermatologist is the right person to take advice from.

b. Cysts – Cystic Acne is very painful. Inflammation occurs frequently and the breakouts are quite unwanted. Cysts spread on face, upper arms, chest, back, shoulders and once the spreading starts, there is no end to it. The more you try to do something with them, the more they will leave scars and remember these scars take months and years to get clear. So, instead of taking such a situation in your own hands, you better visit a Dermatologist for a solution.

If acne is taken care at home, then there is nothing like it.

1. Twice daily, clean your face with cool clean water (do not use hot water). If you need to use soap, then use natural soaps made of neem; if this is not available, then use natural soaps made of sandalwood. Do not use the general soaps from the rack, which are full of chemicals and harmful-for-skin ingredients.

2. Make sure to keep your hands clean and germ-free every time you have the urge of touching the sores. It is highly recommended not to touch the sores at all as the germs will spread and affect the unaffected areas.

3. Your bowel movement should be regular and better would be if you pass your bowel at a particular time every day.

4. Sleep is a must; no matter how busy you are, no matter how sleepless you feel, you need at least 6 to 7 hours (in continuity) of undisturbed sleep.

5. Add good portion of vegetables, whole grains and fruits in your diet. Nothing is better than having raw vegetable and fruit salads but make sure that you add very little or no salt.

6. Avoid refined starches and sugar, fatty food, fried food, oily food and spicy food.

7. Avoid eating candies, ice creams and drinking too much of tea, coffee, soft drinks, and the likes.

8. Never be on empty stomach for hours.

9. Garlic helps in removing the toxins in the blood; so have good amount of garlic – cooked or uncooked is up to you. Even external application of garlic juice on the acne-affected areas proves to be very beneficial.

10. External application of fresh lemon juice on the acne-affected areas gives good result.

11. You can start taking vitamin A and vitamin E tablets but seek a Dermatologist’s advice before you do so.

12. Make a bottle of very effective herbal oil – 5 drops each of rosemary, juniper berries and lemon essential oils are required to be added in a 90 ml bottle of hazelnut oil. Allow it to stand – never shake it. After about an hour and a half, add 3 to 4 drops each of jojoba or olive, apricot kernel and tea tree essential oils. Now, shake the bottle well for the oils to mix. Store the bottle in the refrigerator for at least 3 days. Then, apply this mixture daily using cotton wool at least four times a day after cleaning your face with water.

13. Make a mask of your own – beat one egg white and mix in the puree of half carrot. When the mixture becomes smooth, add ½ tsp each of lime juice and honey; then, thoroughly stir the mixture. Your mask is ready to use. Every time you apply the mask on the affected areas, leave it on for at least twenty five minutes before you wash it off with water. The best hours for applying this mask would be early morning and/or end of the day, say, before going to bed.

After you finally manage to get rid of acne, next you have to work on removing the scars.

1. During the day when you go out of the house for any work, make sure to apply sunscreen lotion in the scarred areas.

2. Creams and lotions meant for wrinkles should not be used on the scarred areas.

3. Keep a strict control on your diet; getting rid of acne does not mean that you can now indulge yourself with fried, oily, junk foods. Till the scars are well rid of, you have to stick to your diet.

4. If there are still some acne left on the affected areas, never pop them as it will help in increasing your scars.

5. Smoking is one dangerous habit if you are a patient of acute acne. You have to give up this habit.

6. If you are in real hurry to remove the scars thoroughly and if you have the money, then you can go for Laser Resurfacing.

The best would be to go for green coconut water treatment. All you have to do is wash the acne-affected areas with this water daily, at an interval of two hours. You need to continue with this treatment for a minimum of three months to see the difference and the radiance your skin will emit!
