Herbs for Good Hair Health

By Bobby Blueblood

Good and shining hair adds beauty to your personality and it is rightly said that healthy hair is a sign of healthy body. Keratin is a protein present in the hair; in fact, hair is made up of this protein. Actually, our hair is dead cells and the only part that is alive is called ‘follicle’. It is located below the scalp, and the sebaceous glands near these follicles give our hair the shiny and vibrant look. On the other hand, these sebaceous glands also give our hair the dry or oily look depending on the production of sebum.

Less hair growth can be the result of surgery, leukemia, genetic influence, daily use of conventional medicines in the form of capsules and tablets, dandruff, and frequent use of hair gels, soaps and shampoos. For shampooing your hair, it would be safe and harmless to use any herbal shampoo.

Natural herbs are the best to use if you want to have good hair and excellent growth. There are no known or dangerous side effects of these herbs unlike the chemical remedies that have flooded and are still flooding in the market.

Now, if you don’t want to use the herbs directly on your hair, then go for massaging your scalp with good herbal oil on a daily or alternate-day basis.

Let us look at few natural herbs that effective help in good growth of the hair.

  1. Aloe Vera – use the natural gel (that you can get by breaking a part of the plant) of this herb once a week; keep on for some time and then wash your hair with clean water.
  2. Neem – this herb is known to have various properties to cater to various human diseases. Here, as a natural disinfectant, it takes care of the infection on the scalp that harms the hair follicle. Wash your hair with neem water (boil some leaves in water and cool it) daily for both hair growth and removal of dandruff.
  3. Olive leaves – a great remedy for hair loss is mixing crushed olive leaves in vinegar and applying it on hair. Keep it on for some time and then wash off with clean water. This can be done once a week.
  4. Henna leaves – this herb takes good care of hair; it is also a natural dye. The leaves are washed, grounded to paste and used on hair once every week. Leave it on for about 15 to 20 minutes and wash off properly. If you want to bring natural color to your hair, that is, if you don’t want your hair to be black, then mix lemon juice and coffee powder with the paste in an iron bowl and leave it for an hour, after which apply the paste on your hair. Leave it on for at least an hour, and wash off properly. This coloring of hair can be done once or twice a month.

Other than the above herbs, you can try out the following:

  1. Apply a mixture of honey, warm oil and three-fourth spoon of cinnamon powder on your scalp if you want your hair to grow, and be shiny and soft. Leave it on for about 10 to 15 minutes and wash off properly.
  2. Coconut oil is excellent for voluminous hair growth. Hair becomes dark, soft and healthy. If you don’t like to massage oil in your hair, then you can wash your hair with coconut milk – scrap fresh coconut and soak it in warm water for an hour or two. Then strain it and it becomes ready to use. Coconut milk is also excellent for hair growth.
  3. You can use a mixture of honey and egg yolk and apply it on your scalp. Leave it on for some time and wash off with lemon juice first till the smell of egg is countered. Then, wash the hair properly with clean water.

It is always recommended by doctors and hair specialists that other than using the above herbs, you need to take proper care of your diet that should be rich in proteins, nutrients and vitamin A, if you want natural growth of healthy, shiny, dark and soft hair.
